[ evan pauses in his various little tasks and smirks, just slightly. it's not out of humor or amusement or even whatever sarcastic thought he might have in mind. it's almost automatic. the acknowledgment of what this place is, and that he's just as stuck here as david and the rest of them. ]

he reaches out and picks up a mask - not the usual one, just another one hanging off the wall - and adjusts the strap that should hold it in place. ]

[ david's tempted to argue he's tried to understand plenty of animals, but then again a friend or ex-girlfriend's pet probably doesn't count. not for the point evan's making anyway. he supposed they are like animals to it, cattle or some shit. ]

[ he watches evan adjust the mask , guess he's about to run out of that limited reserve of patience. nobody's really waiting for him, they all know he'll turn up sooner or later, but david will take the hint. gives himself a quick once over just to make sure he's not forgetting anything and then starts toward the door. ]
[ he pulls the mask on. it's not the worst one he has, being metal instead of bone, but the way the dim light of the room catches on the hammered flats and edges is never even. it's not subtle, but that's not what he does. ]
Got somethin' coming up.
[ he picks up his cleaver. there's always old blood on it, but right now, there's still some of the demogorgon's, too.
it's not necessary to get ready and armed before a trial; he'll show up with something to kill with no matter what. but it makes him feel like he's doing something right, if he's not dragged in unawares. ]
[ david frowns a little at the thought, he always hates being reminded of evan going to trial when he's been here, but there's nothing worth saying or doing about it. it dimly occurs to him that he doesn't think he's been called to trial while he's been here, not since they started doing... whatever this is, but that gets filtered into him hoping he doesn't get back to the fire and get sucked into evan's next trial. he's gonna be in a mood, even for him. ]
[ he makes a vague gesture as a goodbye and leaves. probably gonna dig into his own booze when he gets back. ]
